Author's Chapter Notes:
Gibbs and Abby try to reconcile themselves after their fight, which leads to a romantic encounter.
------------"The Make-Up"------------
story by R. O. Knight
based on the hit television series "NCIS"
Created by Donald P. Bellisario

Gibbs sat at his workbench down in the basement pouring himself a third glass of whiskey.

As he swallowed a gulp of whiskey he found himself torn between trying to pretend that their fight had never happened and just plain kicking himself for hurting the woman he loved.

The light in the basement wasn't great, but it was good enough for what he used it for. Tonight, though, he found himself wondering if he could hide his shame just by turning the lights completely off.

"Why do I do this?" Gibbs thought to himself as he took another gulp of his whiskey.

"Why can't I just learn to keep my mouth shut?" he wondered aloud.

---------------------------------------

Abby sat on the floor in Gibbs' bedroom leaning against the door.

She wiped tears from her eyes as she hugged herself. She knew Gibbs was hurting just as much as she was, and she hated that either one of them was hurting.

"I hate-" she started, but then stopped and reprimanded herself. She couldn't believe that thought had popped into her head--and about Jethro Gibbs.

But he had started it, and he had not even tried to apologize, although she hadn't really given him a chance, but still.

Things had been going so well until now. "Is this what its gonna be like?" she wondered.

Abby knew all too well what Gibbs' track record with women was like. The only woman Gibbs had ever really really loved and whom he had had a family with was his first wife, Shannon.

After Shannon and his daughter Kelly were murdered by a columbian drug lord, Gibbs had married three more times. They had each divorced him. She knew better than anyone, well except perhaps Ducky and Director Shepherd, how broken Gibbs' heart had been after all of that.

She knew that Gibbs wouldn't change overnight, and she wasn't really trying to change him anyway.

Abby sat there on the floor in Gibbs' room leaning against the door reflecting, for nearly an hour, on everything that had happened, and it wasn't long before she realized what really scared her--what it was that really caused her too hurt.

She was afraid that she might lose Gibbs--that he might leave her. This she knew was an absurd, almost unbelievable, thought. She knew how much he cared for her, and as much as she hated to admit it she knew that he would die for her.

She also knew that she had had some reservations about this relationship from the beginning. She had been afraid that if she and Gibbs' got close, and then it didn't work out, that things would be different between them. That she might lose what she had with Gibbs--and that was not an option.

She was in love with Jethro Gibbs, of that much she was sure. Now she just had to make things right with him.

Abby stood and steadied herself. She took a deep breath and tried to collect and compose herself before continuing.

---------------------------------------

In the basement Gibbs sat at his workbench just staring at the whiskey bottle on the table in front of him. He had stopped after the fifth drink, he just couldn't do it this way--not this time.

Abby meant everything to him. Being with her made his heart hurt just a little bit less with each day. He couldn't afford to let his stupidity or his arrogance get in the way--not this time.

He knew from experience what that would eventually lead to.

...FLASHBACK SEQUENCE...

Gibbs and Ducky are standing in the NCIS interrogation/observation room. The two men are engaged in a heated conversation.

In the interrogation room sits notorious serial killer Kyle Boone.

The only part of that conversation between Ducky and himself, that stood out at this particular moment for Gibbs, was the last thing Ducky said to him as he left the observation room.

"...You made it impossible for her to stay!" Ducky said angrily as he watched Gibbs leave the room.

...END OF FLASHBACK SEQUENCE...

Gibbs was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he did not notice Abby standing on the stairs.

"Thanks Duck." Gibbs whispered, a slight grin breaking the corners of his mouth.

Gibbs stood up and grabbed the bottle of whiskey, and then with a grin tossed it into a small waste bin hidden underneath the workbench.

Standing there on the basement stairs Abby saw Gibbs toss the bottle of Jack into the waste bin. She even saw the grin on his face--she wasn't sure if he was happy about something, or just drunk.

Gibbs turned towards the stairs ready to head upstairs when he noticed Abby standing half-way down the stairs. "Abs?"

Abby stood frozen to the spot where she stood--a little afraid.

Gibbs knew, or thought he knew, what she was thinking. he motioned with his head for her to come down.

Abby slowly made her way down the stairs, her pigtails bouncing slightly with each step she took.

Gibbs couldn't help but crack an amused grin at how much she resembled a small child, who'd just been punished and was now afraid to face their parent(s), coming down the stairs.

Abby reached the very bottom of the stairs and stood there for a moment staring at Gibbs, biting her lip, her eyes still a bit moist and slightly red.

"Abs." Gibbs said quietly trying to look serious, although he was sure his eyes betrayed his real intentions because he saw a grin spread across Abby's lips.

Abby suddenly felt so relieved. She could tell he wasn't angry--she could see it in his eyes.

She made her way over to Gibbs who held out his arms and pulled her into their warmth.

"I never gave you a chance." she said quietly.

"Nope, you were too busy makin' an ass of yourself." Gibbs said grinning that trademark "Gibbs" grin.

Abby couldn't help but laugh at Gibbs' remark.

"I shouldn't have yelled at you though." he added softly stealing a kiss.

"No, you shouldn't have," Abby said looking up into Gibbs' face. "But I still love you." she said softly as she kissed her "silver-haired fox".

They didn't really have to say much. They could usually tell what the other was thinking--well, most of the time anyway.

"You really did hurt my feelings, you know?"

"Okay, well, how about I make it up to you?" Gibbs asked.

Abby found this gesture quite amusing.

"And how would you go about doing that?" She asked with a mischievous grin.

"Like this." Gibbs replied scooping her up into his without warning.

"Gibbs." Abby giggled.

"Just follow my lead." Gibbs said with a grin as he walked toward the stairs.

---------------------------------------

Gibbs carried Abby into his bedroom, which was dimly lit from where she had been in there earlier, and closed the door behind them.

He gently placed Abby down on the bed kissing her as he did.

"Gibbs," she breathed as he tried to pull away.

"Shhh." He gently placed a finger to her lips as if to say "hold that thought".

Gibbs pulled away and sat down on the bed. It only took him a few seconds to kick his shoes off at the foot of the bed.

Abby quickly realized that she too was wearing shoes and quickly removed and discarded them just before Gibbs appeared, hovering over her.

"Now let's see...where were we?" She mused as he closed the distance between his lips and hers.

...15 Minutes Later...

Things had certainly heated up considerably.

Abby had managed to get Gibbs out of his polo shirt and the white t-shirt that he wore underneath. And on the other end Gibbs had managed to get Abby out of her mini-skirt and her top.

Gibbs had touched her with his kisses in places that she never knew could turn her on as she was now discovering.

"Hey no fair," Abby protested. "You're still wearing pants." she pointed out playfully.

"Easily fixable," Gibbs chuckled. "Just give me a sec."

Gibbs moved away once more to rid himself of his jeans, which he threw to the floor near his shoes.

When he returned to his woman she was more than ready to continue their endeavor.

"You can still stop this if you want?" Gibbs said between kisses giving her the opportunity to back out before it was too late.

Her only response was a gentle kiss to his lips reassuring him that she would be fine.

It didn't take them too long to rid themselves of the rest of their clothing--the last garment being her panties which somehow ended up being thrown across the room. Halfway there.

"Would you ever leave me, honestly?" Abby asked before Gibbs could go further.

"I'd have to be dead," Gibbs reassured her placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

He entered her in one swift movement.

Abby exhaled a ragged breath as he filled her. "Gibbs," she gasped as her body adjusted to the feel of his.

Gibbs awaited the signal, making sure that she was okay, before continuing.

They started out slowly then rapidly increased their tempo matching each other hit-for-hit as they rode the seemingly out-of-control roller coaster they were on. Their muscles tightening all along the way, until they finally reached its climax--together--holding on to each other for dear life as their bodies were racked with sheer ecstasy. Blindingly magnificent fireworks exploding overhead as they gently floated back down.

"Oh Gibbs," Abby moaned as she collapsed against him.

The two of them laid there for what seemed like a long while bathing in each others warmth.

"I love you Abs," Gibbs whispered as he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

Gibbs pulled the covers up over the two of them, and then wrapped an arm around her and held her close holding on to the moment.

"Some night hunh?" Abby mused and neither one of them could resist the urge to laugh into the darkness.
